Bangkok – Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Co., Ltd., a manufacturer and distributor of beverages under the Suntory and PepsiCo brands in Thailand, has reinforced its commitment in conducting business while taking care of society and the environment, under the vision of “Growing for Good”. Suntory PepsiCo Thailand has recently launched a PET bottle collection for recycling project entitled “Suntory PepsiCo-Bottle Segregation…To Help Street Sweepers” to support the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)’s plastic waste management mission called “Mue Wiset, Waste Segregation…for Street Sweepers”, which is in collaboration with the BMA and alliance, including Less Plastic Thailand, to collect used clear and colorless PET bottles for recycling and converting to reflective PPE suits for street sweepers. Suntory PepsiCo Thailand increased drop points for used PET bottles at major public parks and markets across Bangkok, aiming to collect at least 30,000 used PET bottles under this project for recycling to make visibility reflective PPE suits for BMA’s street sweepers.
Mr. Ashish Joshi, Chief Executive Officer of Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Company Limited, said “Packaging Sustainability Management is one of the company’s key sustainability policies. We have committed to make our packaging friendly to the environment from upstream, midstream to downstream. For instance, the company uses clear and colorless PET bottles to be packaging for all of our beverage products as they are 100% recyclable; and has reduced the use of new plastics in the manufacturing process, including launching number of knowledge-sharing activities on the proper waste segregation to employees and general public. Importantly, Suntory PepsiCo Thailand also focuses on post-consumer packaging management to bring used plastic bottles back to the recycling process. This leads to the launch of the “Suntory PepsiCo-Bottle Segregation…To Help Street Sweepers” project that reflects how the company turns corporate vision into practice. The initiative does not only help reducing the quantity of plastic wastes going to landfills or those might leak to the environment, but also help society by strengthening the safety for street sweepers of the BMA.”
Mr. Pornphrom Vikitsreth, Advisor of Bangkok Governor (Environmental affairs), emphasized the importance of not pouring all wastes together and segregating wastes for further use, via collective collaboration and support from the private and civil sectors. “The BMA has set up the drop points for clear, colorless PET bottles at all Bangkok’s 50 district offices and the Bangkok City Hall in Din Daeng and Sao Chingcha areas, totaling 52 drop points for collecting of clear PET bottles. All used PET bottles collected will be recycled for producing 1,000 reflective PPE suits (42 bottles for one suit) for BMA’s street sweepers. I am delighted that Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Co., Ltd. joined forces with us in dealing with plastic bottle waste by increasing the number of drop points for clear PET bottles that provides greater convenience for all Bangkok residents to join the BMA’s plastic waste management mission called “Mue Wiset, Waste Segregation…for Street Sweepers”. A range of knowledge-based activities will be held by the company to promote better understanding on the proper waste segregation. Suntory PepsiCo Thailand also takes part in recycling of used PET bottles turning to visibility reflective PPE suits to enhance safety of BMA’s street sweepers. I believe that with the support from all sectors will make this mission a success.”
Mr. Metha Senthong, coordinator of the “Waste Segregation for…Street Sweepers” project, Less Plastic Thailand, said that “I am pleased to see Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Co., Ltd. takes part in post-consumer packaging management, especially PET bottles that are 100% recyclable. PET bottles should not be disposed as wastes. Instead, they should be considered as a valuable post-consumer resource that can be recycled and upcycled. As a beverage manufacturer shows its responsibility for packaging waste, we as a consumer should join hands to help managing wastes, properly and help society according to the situation, also.”
